Active vs. Valid Membership

This article describes the relationship between an active and valid membership. And why some memberships may be considered Active.

A membership can be active and not valid, but cannot be valid and not active!

An Active membership

If a membership is active, this means the current date is before the end date set, if any, and it is not on hold.

A Valid membership

If a membership is valid, it can be used for check-in, so long as it is active.

An Valid, Active membership has the following:

  • Is paid.

  • Is not on hold.

  • Is not cancelled.

  • Can be used for check-in according to the membership type check-in rules.

Why a membership is not Valid:

  • Is unpaid.
  • Is on hold.
  • Membership Type cannot be used for that check-in.
    • For example, it is a Prevent General Access type.

What if the membership is unpaid?

An unpaid membership is Active, but not Valid. This means it cannot be checked in successfully until at least the most recent pending order is complete. However, because it is assumed the member still intends to be an active member, the membership is still technically active. If it is unpaid active, the member still has some pending orders related to their membership, but not the most recent that can gain them access to the facility.
